The Music Ministry at St. Leo has a variety of ensembles that participate regularly in parish celebrations. Music reading ability is not required for any vocal ensemble, only the commitment of time for rehearsals and liturgical celebrations. Below are listed some of the ministry opportunities.
For more information on any of these ensembles contact Ross Semler at (304) 229-8945 or email.
Adult Choir – The Adult Choir is open to singers 18 and older. The group meets for rehearsals every Wednesday evening and sings each weekend during the 9:00 a.m. Liturgy from September through May. This group also supports the Liturgy during Holy Week and the Triduum as well as other special events throughout the year as they arise. The Adult Choir sings a variety of traditional and contemporary literature in SATB parts. Rehearsals are Wednesday from 7:30 to 9:00 pm.
Contemporary Choir – The contemporary choir is open to everyone in high school through adult, by audition. This choir leads the congregation in worship every other Sunday, alternating with the children’s choir, and practices one hour before the 11:30 a.m. Mass.
Youth Choir – The Youth Choir is open to all children and teens ages 5-17. The group meets for rehearsal every Wednesday evening from 6:30-7:15 pm and sings every other Sunday for the 11:30 Mass from September through May. This group incorporates a variety of instruments and sings a mix of contemporary and traditional songs suited for young voices.
Cantors/Song Leaders – The cantor has a vital role in the liturgical celebration leading the congregation in sung responses, acclamations and hymns. The cantor also serves as the Psalmist for the liturgy proclaiming the Responsorial Psalm. Cantors need not be able to read music, but should have a strong, confident voice. Those interested in becoming a cantor should have some previous vocal experience (either solo or choir) and must meet with the Music Director first to be considered. New cantors receive training and all are scheduled on a rotating basis.
Instrumentalists – St. Leo Music Ministry is always looking for new instrumentalists to join the celebration. Guitars, strings, woodwinds and brass are all used throughout the year at many liturgies. All skill levels are welcome (beginner to expert). There is always a special need for pianists/organists willing serve as a substitute from time to time.
Funeral Choir – The Funeral Choir is a very special ministry that provides comfort and consolation to families at a difficult time. This group is open to all singers who can be available, many times on short notice. Funeral Choir members do not need to be members of any other established ensemble to participate. The group meets to rehearse one hour prior to the start of the funeral liturgy.
